SERVICES & RESOURCES

Services and Resources

Duke University supports a variety of services and resources for international students, scholars and researchers as well as the staff members who work to welcome them to the Duke community.

There are two major offices that support international students and scholars: the International House and the International Office described in more detail below..  Each specializes in separate services and can provide focused and individualized services to meet each person's needs.  The two offices work together to provide broad opportunities for international students, faculty, researchers, and staff and to help prepare them to take advantage of those opportunities.

International House (I-House) is a recognized national leader in providing orientation, acculturation, counseling, programming, and similar services for the Duke international community.  Its staff members have experience living in cultures other than those of their citizenship as well as knowledge of resources in the Durham community and expertise in intercultural competency.  I-House:

  • Assists internationals with locating housing, transportation, banking, health insurance, and other re-location needs;
  • Provides programming and activities for internationals, their spouses and children, and U.S. Americans interested in other cultures;
  • Provides Intercultural Competency Workshops and Training for the entire Duke community, including particular offices, or for individual staff members;
  • Assists internationals with advocacy or direction when he/she has a question or problem.

I-House is your "Home Away from Home" while you are at Duke University, Medical Center and Health System.

The International Office (IO) is a recognized national leader in visa, immigration, and employment services to the Duke international community.  Its staff members have expertise in F, J, H, TN, O, and other temporary visas and in employment based Lawful Permanent Resident (LPR or "green card") status.  Many members of our staff have lived, taught, studied, or worked outside the U.S.  The IO works with:

  • Faculty and Administration to obtain and maintain appropriate visa documentation for international faculty, researchers, scholars, students, and staff;
  • Duke's international community to help people meet their academic, employment, personal, and immigration/visa goals;
  • The Federal Government, Congress, and colleague schools to reflect the needs of higher education in the nation's laws and regulations.

The International Office can help you understand the range of activities that your temporary status permits and help you take advantage of the many opportunities that Duke and the U.S. offer.

There are a variety of other offices and departments which provide services and resources for those whose work, education or interests have an international component.  For those staff who work with International visitors or researchers, Duke University Financial Services has created specific policy regarding payments to foreign nationals.  Guidelines and forms are available online for the processing of payments.

The Perkins Library offers resources and the University Medical Center provides services  which both focus on the international perspective.
